Family Offices and AI: Europe Is Closer to the Gulf Than You Think

Ask where family offices are putting money into AI and most people will point to the Gulf. Large pools of family wealth, quick decisions and a clear push to diversify have made the region the headline. The latest data suggests that story is only half right.
What the UBS data shows
UBS's Global Family Office Report 2026 surveyed 307 family offices across more than 30 markets, with fieldwork between January and March 2026. Two findings are worth putting side by side.
- AI as the top theme: 57% of European family offices name AI as their top allocation theme, compared with 50% in the Middle East.
- Appetite to reallocate: 82% of Middle Eastern family offices expect to change their strategic allocations over the next 12 months, compared with 67% in Europe.
Read together, the numbers say two different things. The Middle East is more ready to move: more of its family offices plan to reshuffle their portfolios soon. But on AI specifically, European family offices are slightly more likely to call it their top theme.
Why the usual story misses this
The Gulf is the easier story to tell. Its moves are visible and often announced. European family capital tends to move more quietly, through co-investments and fund commitments rather than headlines. Quiet is not the same as absent, and on this data the gap between the two regions is smaller than the usual narrative suggests.
What this means if you are raising for an AI company
- Don't build your list around one region. A target list made only of Gulf family offices leaves out a large pool of European capital that ranks AI as its top theme.
- Expect a different pace. With 82% of Middle Eastern family offices planning to change their allocations within a year, conversations there may move faster. A European office can be just as committed to AI and still take longer to decide.
- Look at the mandate, not the map. What matters is whether a particular family office is allocating to AI right now, at your stage and ticket size. That is the kind of detail Astel captures from live investor meetings, rather than assuming it from geography.
Our read
The opportunity isn't defined by geography alone. Family offices in both regions are actively reassessing where AI fits in their portfolios. Founders and advisors who treat Europe as an afterthought are leaving real capital on the table.
